Just Do It!

Last month I encouraged us to work together as the body of Christ here at NPC to keep us optimally growing and functioning. I urged you to seek and find a special ministry where you can use your strengths to support the life and growth of all the others in the church.

Perhaps you asked yourself, “But how do I find my specialty?”

One answer is: “Experiment!”

Bill Hybels in “The Volunteer Revolution” says this: “Use whatever understanding you have of your personality, passions, areas of interests, talents and preferences to guide you in a general serving direction. Look at the needs in your church and community. Then jump in with a willing heart and an open mind. Drape the servant’s towel over your arm and get busy. Don’t worry about finding a perfect fit immediately. Give yourself permission to learn as you experiment.”

•  Look at the NPC Classifieds for a variety of opportunities:

Can you paint, serve meals, plan fundraisers, greet, usher, care for children or sort clothing?

•  Look at the ongoing programs of the church for opportunities:

Teach or shepherd children or teach adults. Help at Alpha or the New Members class. Share a creative talent musically or by arranging the flowers. Serve by driving a homebound member or by helping at the soup kitchen.

•  Look at the one-time opportunities:

The Men’s or Women’s Retreat need team members with a variety of skills such as planning, phoning or facilitating small groups. Noroton Lectures needs team members with skills such as serving and publicity. VBS needs team members with a variety of talents.

•  Look at Ministries in the process of redevelopment:

The Men’s Ministry needs team members for visioning and connecting with other men. The Local Mission Team wants to center its efforts on three ministries in South Norwalk and needs team members for organization, publicity and helping.

Choose a ministry and try it out! I can help you get plugged in or you can speak to the team members directly.

Director of Equipping and Evangelism
