An Evangelist - Who Me?
"Then Jesus came to them and said, ´All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.´"
Matthew 28:18-20, NRSV
As Christians, Jesus commissions each one of us to be an evangelist. The Greek word evangelion means ´good news´ or ´gospel.´ To evangelize is to spread the good news about Jesus Christ. A related term that Christians use is "witness." A Christian is a witness to who Jesus is and to what He does in people's lives. Many people get nervous about sharing the gospel with others.
Paul says this about our sharing in 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, "My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with the demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."
In order for our words to be effective we need to rely on God's power through the Holy Spirit. We can also evangelize through our actions. When we genuinely care for someone and build a relationship with them, then they are much more likely to have an open heart for what we have to say about Jesus. The following articles taken from "The Spire" are meant to encourage you to step out in faith and be a bolder and more loving witness through your actions and words.
"Again Jesus said, ´Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.´ And with that he breathed on them and said, ´Receive the Holy Spirit." John 20:21-22, NRSV
"Peter replied, ´Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God calls to him."
Acts 2:38-39,NRSV
