The George Washington Carver Community Center
The mission of The Carver, an organization founded in 1938 to serve at-risk children and their families, is to provide educational, social and recreational programs to motivate and support youth to reach for a post-secondary education and thus to break the cycle of poverty in their families. (85% of Carver's youth enroll in college or post-secondary education and 66% earn a degree - compared to 17% of African Americans nationwide.)
Noroton is making a new commitment to partner with The Carver. You may choose to become involved in one of The Carver's ongoing programs such as its Youth Development Program (encourages, supports and prepares middle and high school students for college admission), or CASPER Club (a safe, secure after-school environment for elementary children enriched by tutoring, homework help, recreational activities and arts and crafts).
You may also feel led to participate in one of several initiatives being planned by NPC in partnership with The Carver:
- *Books Are Fun ~ organize and enhance the Carver
library/resources; collect gently used books; read at Friday read-aloud sessions. (Contact Linda Russell at LBRussell32@aol.com )
- *March Madness at the Carver ~ help NPC fathers organize a fun-filled basketball event (clinics, games, pizza) in the Carver gym on Friday evening, March 4. (Contact Dawn and Kevin Fitzpatrick at fitz49@optonline.net)
- *Mother's Day Party ~ work with a team creating an event that honors mothers, culminating in a special meal on Friday, May 6. (Contact Eleanor Palmer at edppalmer@yahoo.com)
