W
e used
to
joke in New
Hampshire
that there were
only two seasons
of the year, Mud Season and the
Fourth of July. Mud Season had to
pass for spring up North, since the
melting snow had to wait for the
sub soil to thaw. That might take
until the Fourth of July sometimes-
hence the two “main” seasons.
Southern Connecticut grants us the
full promise of a true “Spring” with
crocuses, daffodils and forsythia all
announcing that spring has come and
summer is right around the corner.
After this chilly March, I say it can’t
come soon enough!
We all know that you can’t rush the
growing process but you can feed
and water your plants. The same is
true for our souls. We can’t force
rapid growth of spiritual qualities
like love, joy and peace, but we can
choose to either feed or starve our
souls based on our spiritual practices.
The soul’s needs are more subtle
than the body’s; otherwise we would
feed it more regularly. However,
the Creator endowed both the soul
and the body with the dynamic of
responding to the care each one
receives from us. Take care of your
body; it will take care of you. Take
care of your soul and it will be there
with resiliency and depth for the
trying times life “springs” upon us.
Springtime is God’s gift which
produces beauty around our homes
and in our gardens. Worship is God’s
gift to grow beauty in our hearts
and souls. This Spring, for three
Sundays in April and one in May, we
will look at four spiritual practices
Christians have always turned to, for
tending the life of our souls. These
are simple to list, but hard to put
into practice regularly – Meditation,
Worship, Prayer and Service. We
hope you can join us each Sunday at
one of our four services (or on the
Web if you are traveling) to learn
from our Spring Sermon Series on
“Tending the Garden of Your Soul.”
