very
year in
January, the
Elders, Dea-
cons, Pastors
and Directors get
together for a Saturday
morning retreat. It’s a time to share
Scripture, review the challenges for
the year ahead, pray, and look at the
crucial contributions we can make
to strengthen our church. This year,
after Pastor Jimmy shared an open-
ing devotion, I outlined some of
our blessings in 2015 and some of
the challenges that lie ahead for all
churches in the next few years. I then
invited our leaders to help us have
one of our strongest years as a church
as we invite all of our members to
commit to three simple disciplines –
three ways to act on our love of God
and love of our neighbor – the core
teaching of our Lord. If each of us
dedicated ourselves to these three
practices, our church would serve the
Lord even better than we do today!
So what did I suggest? Number one
– we would have a great year if every
member would
pray about showing
the love of the Lord to one person
in their life and, if possible, invite them
to our church. This might be a new
friend, a co-worker, or a neighbor. It
might even be someone we used to
see at services but haven’t seen for a
while. During construction, people
do drop out of the life of the church.
It’s a hassle to park or attend services.
Some don’t like hearing about money,
and some, for varying reasons, just
get out of the habit of coming. Ask
yourself, who has God put in my life
that might need a friend’s care and
love this year? Reach out, find one
person you can pray for and serve
with the great love that the Lord has
given you! You won’t only bless their
year, you will be blessed as well. And
if they end up joining you by coming
to church, we all will be blessed. I
greeted a family on Christmas Eve
who had been MIA (missing in action)
for 6 months or more. “Welcome
back,” I said. I’m told that they felt
welcomed and will be coming back. I
know some people find it awkward to
go to church for the first time or even
return unless they have a friend to
sit with and welcome them. So let’s
all be ready to find a friend to share
God’s love with in 2016.
Number two – we would have a
great year if e
veryone committed
him or herself to one new spiritual
growth opportunity
. I read that Life-
way research found that the second
highest New Year’s resolution was
