W
hen I
came
to Noroton
nine years ago,
our Property
Team made a
presentation at
session outlining about 3-5 million
dollars of repairs that our 50 year
old buildings desperately needed
within the next 5 years. Like a home
buyer with sticker shock, I sat back,
caught my breath and prayed. Then
we dug in and studied everything we
should address about our ministry
plans for the next decade. We knew
we had a large, vibrant ministry that
was, for lack of a better term, “facility
challenged”. Our study showed that
addressing most of these challenges
at the same time was the most
prudent and cost effective way to
proceed. So a master plan was
created and, in October of 2011, the
congregation approved it and voted
to raise funds that would determine
how much of this plan could be
addressed in the next few years.
Now, 18 months later, I stand in awe
of our progress towards the plans we
called
Foundations
for the Future
. To
date our capital stewardship efforts
have raised $12,000,000 in pledges.
This great generosity has allowed us
to re-lead our 145 year old chapel
windows, purchase new energy
efficient sanctuary windows, install a
new sound system in the church and
Horton Hall and plan for electrical
and gas conversion upgrades. While
we have been hard at work fixing
our current buildings, our Building
Team, now led by Brian Smalley, has
been working to refine our master
plan designs to arrive at an affordable
phase 1 of a two phase plan.
I’m very pleased to announce
that Monday, May 13, the Session
unanimously approved the Building
Team’s final design for Phase 1. This
will be a redesign of our parking lot
which brings our playgrounds next to
the CE Wing, raises the level of the
parking lot to allow for a second floor
level entry to our church with a new
center lobby and administration wing.
In this new center space we will also
gain a new choir room and mission
room, re-purpose the library and add
several meeting spaces for 50-100
people. The CE wing will receive
a new roof, new windows, air-
conditioning and will be completely
repurposed to education functions.
The addition of 11,000 new square
feet and the extensive remodeling of
much of the CE wing, will be a great
addition to our church allowing us
to enhance fellowship and education
while improving safety and security
