Women's and Caring Ministries
The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth
and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands,
as if he needed anything, because
he himself gives all of us life and breath and
everything else.
— Acts 17:24-25
Ask and you will
receive,
and your joy will be complete.
— John 16:24b
Here comes our season of giving and receiving! We talk a lot about what
a blessing it is to give. And it is a great blessing. Who doesn’t love to
participate in the work of God’s beautiful kingdom by giving of him/herself?
And doesn’t God use us? Truly a gift.
But sometimes I think we focus so much on the giving that we forget how in
need we are of receiving. Everything we receive is a gift from God.
What does it mean to receive? A definition I found was to
actively take hold
of: To accept what is available.
What does it mean to
actively take hold
of what
God gives us?
There are many things we receive- even over the course of a day-
Receive forgiveness
Receive the Holy Spirit
Receive help
Receive feedback
Receive gifts
Receive instruction
Receive orders (as a soldier)
I think of a receiving line, or a reception desk- to greet visitors and guests.
I think of a receiving blanket- in which to make an infant comfortable and safe.
I think of a wedding reception- where the new couple is
actively taken hold of
and accepted
as a new social unit.
My prayer for us in this season of giving and receiving is that we would find
ourselves overflowing with joy as we receive- actively take hold of- the gifts
that God lavishes upon us. That we would be known as people who abide in
joy.
